I’m a bit old-fashioned in that I believe a painting should have a focal point. You can produce a work with great colours and impeccable drawing but if something is wrong with the composition it will be disturbing to the viewer. When sketching try the scene from several different viewpoints, don’t forget you don’t have to position everything as you see it – you can decide to add something or take something away, make something larger or smaller.
The eye of the viewer should be lead into the painting to rest for a while on something of interest. The focal point should not be in the centre but slightly off-centre. Try to avoid leaving the centre of your painting empty as in the 2 sketches below. Your eye goes backwards and forwards between the two trees and the two buildings. Your eye is not lead in to the sketch.

composition1 What's wrong here. There is no focal point. The trees are too similar in size so your eye goes back and forth between both. The horizon is on the centre line, it should either be above or below.

composition2

This sketch has the same problem no focal point the centre is too empty
